A CONTINENT IN MOURNING: Congolese Hero Miguel Masaisai Tragically Killed During "Pedals for Peace" Journey

A Legacy Cut Short

A journey that inspired millions of people across Africa has ended in sudden, devastating tragedy. Miguel Masaisai, the courageous 23 years old Congolese cyclist riding over 10, kilometers from Goma to Morocco to demand peace for Easter DRC —has passed away following a fatal traffic accident.

Known to many as "the unstoppable Masai," Miguel had set off from his war torn hometown of Goma on May 1st under his self-launched "Pedals for Peace" initiative. having survived the massacres in eastern Congo and fled to Kinshasa, Miguel refused to remain silent while his homeland burned. Lacking political power or military weapons, he chose the only tool he had: his Bicycle.

"I want to do something for my country because I cannot go to the war to fight with a gun. The only thing that I have is my bike." — Miguel Masaisai

After successfully pedaling over 6,500 kilometers across the entire breadth of the DRC—receiving national honors as the first Congolese cyclist to ride across the country from east to west—he crossed into Congo-Brazzaville heading toward North Africa.

Tragedy struck near Ouesso in northern Congo-Brazzaville near the Cameroon border. After his bicycle suffered a mechanical breakdown, Miguel accepted a ride in a local vehicle to reach a repair shop so he could keep his mission alive. Tragically, the vehicle was involved in a fatal collision with a heavy truck, killing Miguel alongside the driver and passengers.
