Mini AFCON, Big Drama, and a Stolen Trophy: What Happened at the Cincinnati African Cup?

Mini AFCON, Big Drama, and a Stolen Trophy: What Happened at the Cincinnati African Cup?

The soccer was amazing. The crowd was loud. Ivory Coast beat Senegal 5–2 in the big final on Sunday. But behind all the goals and cheering, the organization was a total mess! There were missing balls, big arguments, and yes—someone actually stole the trophy before the game even ended.

💡
At Zaiear, we love local sports, but we also have to tell the truth about what happened on the field.

"Hey, Where is the Ball?"

Right here in Cincinnati, teams showed up ready to play, but the organizers forgot basic things.

During one game, Mauritania beat Congo (DRC) 1–0. The match was played using Congo’s own soccer ball. So when Congo lost, they packed their bags, took their ball, and went home!

Right after that, Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso walked onto the field to play, but they had to stop and wait because nobody had a ball for them to use. Imagine setting up a whole tournament and having to ask around, "Hey, does anyone have a ball we can borrow?"

Also, the team names were just for fun. Ivory Coast had players from Senegal and Mali on their team, and other teams did the same thing. It was a mix of all our local talent, no matter what flag was on the shirt!

The games were super intense. Players were pushing, falling, and almost getting into fights after hard fouls.

Every few minutes, players were yelling at the referees, and the refs were yelling back. Because there was not enough security or organization on the sidelines, every match felt like it was two seconds away from turning into a full wrestling match!

The Great Trophy Heist

The crazy part happened during the final game.

Ivory Coast was winning 5–2, and the Senegal fans were not happy. While everyone was watching the game, a guy from the Senegal crowd walked over to the table, grabbed the championship trophy, and just walked away with it!

Nobody sitting near the table noticed until the game ended and the organizers looked around like, "Wait... where is the trophy?"

When it was time for the medals, things got even wilder. The Senegal team took their second-place medals, swapped them with each other, skipped the official ceremony, and walked out to party in the parking lot!

The End Result

Congratulations to Ivory Coast for winning the tournament! But next year, Cincinnati needs better security, actual extra soccer balls, and maybe a security guard sitting right on top of the trophy!

If the guy who took the trophy is reading this, please return it—or at least trade it back for a soccer ball so the teams can practice for next year!
