Do you remember your favorite childhood snack? Mine was my mom’s puff-puff, what we call mikata in Congo. Have you ever thought of turning your favorite treat into a business? I certainly didn’t. Or maybe I did, but that’s not the point. The point is, that’s exactly what Oury’s Frosty Treats represents: a taste of memory.

For those of us who have known Oury since we met back in 2013, her current adventure comes as no surprise. From her early days at the Academy of World Languages (AWL) to her time at Withrow University High School, Oury has always been a force of nature.

She was a poet, a fierce advocate for her Senegalese and African heritage, a natural-born leader, and from time to time a bit of a rebel. I still remember one day during summer school; she boarded the bus in her school uniform, but as soon as she looked out the window and saw we were moving, she immediately started changing into her own clothes!

Today, that same passion is fueling Cincinnati’s newest culinary gem: Oury's Frosty Treats LLC.

A Journey of Flavor and Friendship

The seeds of her business were planted not in a boardroom, but in a break room. Oury began bringing her favorite childhood snacks from Senegal to share with her coworkers. What started as a simple gesture of cultural exchange quickly transformed into a demand for more. Her colleagues weren't just eating; they were asking to pay for seconds. In that moment of shared flavor and community, Oury's Frosty Treats LLC truly came to life.

More Than a Business: A Community Pillar

Oury’s journey from a student at Withrow to a business owner is a testament to the power of representation. Beyond the kitchen, she is a dedicated mentor who regularly returns to local schools to speak with young girls, encouraging them to "Rock their Melanin." This mission is deeply personal. Like many of us, Oury faced bullying in her youth for being "too dark" or "too African." It is a struggle we shared—one that attempted to dim our light but instead forged the strength we carry today. By teaching the next generation to embrace their skin, she is turning past pain into a platform for pride.

Her commitment to service recently took center stage at the 46th Anniversary of Miss Black Cincinnati and the 36th Anniversary of Miss Black Teen Cincinnati. Oury didn’t just attend; she served. By providing professional makeup and photography for the contestants, she ensured every young woman felt empowered, celebrated, and seen.

Market Day at Findlay Market

On Sunday, April 19th, from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Oury brought her Frosty Treats to the heart of the "Queen City" at Findlay Market. I had the chance to experience the magic firsthand, alongside a crowd of community members who turned out in force.

The Power of Community

In an era where people often prioritize global corporations and billionaires, it was refreshing to see the community rally around a local entrepreneur. Oury’s table was packed; the line was so long I almost felt bad for the vendors next to her. Seeing the smiles and genuine happiness on everyone’s face made it clear that this was about more than just food, it was a shared experience.

The Treats

Despite the rush, Oury was in her element smiling, welcoming, and clearly enjoying the moment. Without me even asking, she handed over a generous sample of her Mangonada. It was a revelation; I experienced a taste and feeling I hadn’t found in American mangoes. It was the perfect balance of sweet, sour, and a distinct kick of spice.

Then came my favorite childhood snack: the puff-puff (mikate). But this wasn't just the snack I remembered; it was reimagined. Loaded with toppings like Biscoff and whipped cream, it was an incredible fusion of tradition and new-school flavor.

Side Note: A line so long it makes the neighboring vendors jealous is the ultimate "small business" flex. If she adds any more toppings to those puff puffs, she’s going to need a bigger table and I’m going to need a bigger belt!”

A Legacy in the Making

Oury’s Frosty Treats is more than just a business; it’s a living map of a journey that spans from Senegal to the heart of Cincinnati. Whether she is empowering young women or catering a family's milestone, Oury is proof that when you lead with love and stay true to your roots, the community will always find a seat at your table.
